Our History
White County has history that dates back to the mound-builders civilization. You can learn about this history at the White County History Museum in Cleveland, located in the White County courthouse and home of the White County Historical Society, the historical museum features a number of exhibits and displays that reflect on the Civil War with old documents and historical facts, as well as depict the history of the area. The courthouse, built between 1859 and 1860, is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. You can also learn about our history at the History Museum at Sautee Nacoochee Community Center.
The Hardman Farm anchors a corner of the Nacoochee Valley, home of one of Georgia’s governors and an innovative farmer in his time. Nora Mill, both Sautee and Nacoochee valleys are on historic register. You’ll note a number of cottage industries that have grown up in these old buildings.
